What to Expect
A liturgy carried from apostolic succession through the Western church.
The clergy vest in Western vestments — the chasuble, the stole, the alb — and the colors of those vestments change with the church year, exactly as this site does. In Advent the altar wears violet; at Easter, white and gold; at Pentecost, red; through the long Season after Pentecost, green. The colors are customary, not rubrical law, and they remain parish-adjustable — but they are the church’s lived practice, and the cathedral keeps them.
There is no dress code and no requirement of membership. The Mother Church receives all who come. If you have not worshipped in the African Orthodox tradition before, you will find a liturgy that is at once familiar in its Western shape and particular in its inheritance — a Black-led church under Black authority, carrying an unbroken apostolic line from 1921.
The Church Year
The vestments change with the year. So does the cathedral.
The liturgy the cathedral keeps is not a single service repeated unchanged — it is the church year, a cycle of seasons that moves from Advent’s waiting through Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, and the long ordinary time that follows. Each season has its own color, its own readings, its own posture of prayer. The site you are reading vests itself with that same year: the colors change as the vestments change, and the season banner above names where the church stands today.
